GMX exchange review

GMX is a wallet-connected perpetual and swap protocol with direct markets on Arbitrum, Avalanche and MegaETH. It uses oracle prices and pooled liquidity instead of a central limit order book. This review assesses how that design affects execution, cost, account setup and risk.

There is no single rating because the result depends on market, size, holding period and the trader's preferred execution model. The useful question is whether GMX's pool-based mechanics fit a specific trade better than an order-book venue.

What GMX offers

The main product is leveraged perpetual trading. GMX also supports token swaps, GM and GLV liquidity positions, GMX staking and a multichain GMX Account. Maximum leverage and available collateral differ by market.

Users connect a compatible wallet instead of creating a conventional email-and-password exchange account. Positions and margin still interact with protocol contracts, so wallet access does not remove smart-contract, oracle, keeper or liquidation risk.

Trading and execution experience

GMX does not ask a maker to rest an order opposite every trade. Chainlink Data Streams provide a minPrice and maxPrice, while market liquidity and open-interest balance affect whether the order is valid and how net price impact is calculated.

A keeper executes a submitted order after checking prices, liquidity, leverage and other conditions. This creates a different workflow from an order book. The trader must review expected execution, allowed slippage for market orders, price impact and the final on-chain status.

Express and One-Click modes reduce repeated wallet prompts. One-Click uses a locally stored sub-account key with an authorization limit, which makes device and browser security important.

GMX fees

Most position operations currently cost 0.04% when they improve long/short open-interest balance and 0.06% when they worsen it. Some markets, including specified TradFi products, can use different schedules.

A position can also incur borrowing, funding, network execution and price-impact costs. Only the side with larger open interest currently pays the borrow fee. Funding can be a payment or credit between the two sides.

Referral discounts apply to eligible opening and closing position fees. They do not reduce borrowing or funding. A comparison based only on the headline position rate can therefore give the wrong result.

Networks and account modes

Direct wallet trading is available on Arbitrum, Avalanche and MegaETH. GMX Account is a separate balance on Arbitrum that can be funded from supported source chains such as Ethereum, Base and BNB.

Classic Trading uses normal wallet transactions. Express Trading signs messages and uses relay infrastructure. One-Click adds a locally stored key for authorized actions. Smart-contract wallets do not currently support the Express and One-Click paths documented by GMX.

Where the design can be useful

The pool-based interface can suit traders who do not want to manage resting order-book liquidity. It provides a visible estimate of fees, price impact and liquidation before submission, subject to market movement and execution conditions.

The public API, contracts and market data make independent verification possible. GMX also publishes security reviews, known issues and an active bug-bounty program. These are useful controls, not guarantees.

Limitations and material risks

Execution is not guaranteed merely because a chart crosses a trigger. Signed prices, liquidity, leverage, execution fees and contract checks must still pass. A stop-loss can fail or execute after a fast move has already made the position liquidatable.

GM and GLV liquidity can constrain order size and expose liquidity providers to asset values and trader PnL. Governance and privileged roles can change parameters. Network congestion, bridge issues or contract defects can affect access and funds.

GMX is also a leveraged-derivatives product. An interface can be clear while the financial risk remains high. A trader can lose most or all collateral assigned to a position.

Who GMX may fit

GMX may fit a trader who prefers wallet-connected access, a pool-based execution model and markets on its supported chains. It may be less suitable for someone who needs a traditional order book, wants a specific maker strategy or does not understand oracle and keeper execution.

Review the exact market rather than the platform name alone. Compare full cost, available liquidity, chain risk and order controls with the alternatives before funding a position.
